MIDVALE — A 32-year-old man who allegedly said he was going to "solve the problem" by killing his sister was arrested Tuesday after police say he broke into her apartment and stabbed her.

Taylor Don Hooiman was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of attempted murder, aggravated assault and aggravated burglary.

Tuesday night, Unified police received a call from a woman stating that her son, Hooiman, was on his way to his sister's residence to kill her, according to a police booking affidavit.

When Hooiman arrived at the apartment near 7400 S. State, "he scaled the exterior of the apartment building to the deck" on the second floor where his sister lives, the affidavit states. "Taylor attempted to get into the residence through the sliding glass door, but it was locked. Taylor then began to push on the sliding glass door in an effort to break it to gain entry into the apartment. As Taylor was doing this, (his sister) was on the interior of the apartment pushing back against the sliding glass door."

After breaking through the middle portion of the glass door, his sister, who is in her 30's, continued to push to try and keep Hooiman out. But police say Hooiman, who is listed on the jail's website as being 6-foot-1 and 210 pounds, quickly overpowered her.

"Taylor produced a knife and began to slash at Gloria's hands. Gloria received several small lacerations to her hands that were bloody. Eventually Taylor was able to make entry into (her) residence. Taylor got on top of (his sister) and straddled her, with the knife still in hand. Taylor then began to stab (his sister) in the chest, which caused superficial knife tip wounds to her chest. However, Taylor verbalized that he 'couldn't go through with it,'" according to the affidavit.

Police say while Hooiman straddled his sister, he taunted and "poked" her with a knife, but eventually stopped and got off of her, possibly due to her pleading and because her two children were in an adjacent room.

After breaking free from Hooiman, the sister grabbed her children and ran out of the apartment just as police arrived. Hooiman was arrested at gunpoint inside the apartment. Police say he was laughing while being taken into custody. His sister sustained injuries that were not life-threatening.

"In Taylor's interview, he stated he wanted to kill (his sister) to 'solve the problem.' Taylor stated that (his sister) had been messing with him for over two years and that he had the intent of killing her," the affidavit states.
