RIVERDALE — A Riverdale man accused of stabbing and killing a woman in his apartment has a criminal history of domestic violence.
Riverdale police were called to the Greenhill Apartments, 4189 S. 300 West, after a woman was stabbed to death on Thursday night.
Scott Thomas Myers, 39, was booked into the Weber County Jail and charged Friday in 2nd District Court with murder, a first-degree felony; aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, third-degree felonies; possession of a controlled substance and failure to stop at command of police, class A misdemeanors; and interfering with an arresting officer, a class B misdemeanor.
When police arrived, they were told that Myers and the victim, 33-year-old Stacey Nicole Scott, were locked inside the apartment. Officers entered and discovered the woman on the living room floor with several stab wounds to her chest, according to charging documents. A large knife "with what appeared to be blood on it" was found near her body.
Medical personnel tried to resuscitate her but she was pronounced dead at the scene.
"An open rear window on the apartment was found which suggested that the suspect, Scott Myers, had likely fled the apartment," the charges state. Police later found him near 600 W. Riverdale Road and arrested him after deploying a Taser.
Police said Myers had dirt, mud and possible blood on his clothing. He also had "what appeared to be blood on his right hand that appeared mostly dried," as well as some lacerations, the charges say. "EMS personnel advised that (Myers) had admitted to both meth and fentanyl use to them."
A man told police that both he and the victim had driven to Myers' apartment. He said he was playing a game when he heard a commotion and saw Myers on top of Scott stabbing her with a knife, the charges allege. He said he yelled and tried to intervene but Myers swiped at him with the knife. The man left and retrieved a baseball bat from his car, but said Myers locked the door before he could return inside.
The witness told police he believed Myers and Scott had previously been in a relationship.
Suspect was known to law enforcement
Myers is no stranger to run-ins with the law. Court documents show he was convicted of assault in two instances in 2014. Both involved him holding a knife to women's throats.
He was also arrested in 2022. At that time, he was accused of driving drunk and not stopping for police after they tried to pull him over for a fight at a gas station.
Data from the Utah Department of Health shows nearly 40% of domestic violence perpetrators have a criminal history associated with domestic violence.
That's why Kimmi Wolf with the Utah Domestic Violence Coalition said the situation in Riverdale is sad but not surprising.
"The fact that this person did (allegedly) commit domestic violence, it's not a situation that's kind of a one-off. Domestic violence is a pattern, and with a pattern that means that likely there's going to be future incidents," Wolf said.
"There were many indicators that the situation could end badly," she said.
