ST. GEORGE — A man died in Washington County on Sunday from what authorities suspect was an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Washington County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Tuesday that the incident occurred in the Warner Valley, east of St. George, while the man, who authorities didn't publicly name, was engaged in recreational shooting. The call for the incident came about 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.
"The male was transported to the St. George Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased," reads Tuesday's statement.
The scene of the incident was about half a mile east of state Route 7 in the Warner Valley, Hurricane Valley Fire Battalion Chief Tyler Ames said. Officials didn't provide many details of what happened, only saying in Tuesday's statement that the preliminary findings indicate "the male subject suffered an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound to his torso."
Detectives are still investigating the incident, but officials say there is no danger or threat to the community. Several agencies responded to Sunday's incident.
