LEHI — Even though Lehi is one of the most populated cities in the state, it has only ever had one ZIP code. But because of recent substantial growth, the U.S. Postal Service is creating a new ZIP code for the northern part of the city.

Starting July 1, portions of Lehi will have the ZIP code 84048 to "provide efficient and cost-effective mail delivery now and for the future," the Postal Service said. The rest of Lehi will continue with the ZIP code 84043.

"The new ZIP code became necessary due to the rapid growth in the area and allows for the addition of new delivery routes and new addresses in the area. Adding the new ZIP code will also help the Postal Service to sort, ship and deliver the mail more efficiently," the agency said.

Lehi has been in the Top 10 most populated cities in the state for the last two years. The city's population has increased approximately 380% since 2000, according to the latest Census Bureau population estimate, which is nearly five times the population in just a quarter century.

The approximate 8,900 customers who will be affected by the new ZIP code will be notified via mail. The Postal Service did not release a map of the area that will have the new zip code, but spokeswoman Sherry Patterson said it is located on the north side of Lehi, on both sides of I-15.

"If a customer does not receive written notification, they are unaffected by these changes," the Postal Service said in a statement.

Those in the new ZIP code area are encouraged to start using the new code now and notify family, friends and business associates of the change.

The ZIP code will officially go into effect in July, but people can start using it in June to allow residents time to adjust to the change, Patterson said.

Mail with either ZIP code will continue to be delivered for one year following this change. Mail for the 84048 ZIP code area will still be delivered out of the Lehi Post Office at 333 E. Main.
