BEAVER — A Draper man died after he was struck by a semitruck on Friday while checking his engine at the side of I-15 near Beaver.
Utah Highway Patrol investigators say Joseph C. Hansen, 29, had pulled his vehicle onto the right shoulder of the southbound lanes of the freeway at the north end of Beaver.
Hansen got out of his vehicle, apparently to check his engine, and walked to the front and lifted the hood, according to a UHP report. While his hood was still up, Hansen somehow darted close to or slightly into the right lane of traffic.
At the same time, about 2:30 p.m., a Freightliner semitruck was southbound in the right-hand lane on I-15. The semi driver told troopers he saw Hansen step into the roadway and tried to swerve away from him. Despite his efforts, the truck hit Hansen, UHP said.
Emergency responders attempted to transport Hansen to Beaver Valley Hospital to be treated for his injuries, but he died shortly after being placed in the ambulance, the report says.
The crash remained under investigation on Tuesday.
