OREM — The investigation into what led up to a fatal police shooting in Orem continued on Wednesday.
The Utah County Major Crimes Task Force was serving a search warrant at a residence near 400 North and 800 East at about 11:30 p.m. on Monday when one man was shot and killed, according to the sheriff's office.
As of Wednesday afternoon, no additional information had been released by the sheriff's office, including the name or age of the man killed or what prompted officers to shoot. A spokesman for the department said they may wait until Monday before releasing more details in order to protect the "integrity of the investigation."
Some on social media, however, have offered condolences to a 24-year-old man who, according to court records, has the same home address as another man who was arrested by the task force earlier that same night. That man, 33, was arrested along with at least two others at about 9 p.m. for investigation of two counts of drug possession with intent to distribute and other drug-related charges.
The Utah County Major Crimes Task Force typically serves search warrants amid ongoing drug investigations.
According to his booking affidavit, "over the past several weeks, detectives with the Utah County Major Crimes Task Force have been investigating (the 33-year-old man) for distributing controlled substances throughout the Utah County area. During the course of the investigation, a search warrant affidavit was drafted for his residence in Orem." Jail records list the man's address as being near 400 North and 800 East.
The man was pulled over and detained by task force members shortly after driving away from the residence. He was searched and found to be carrying drugs, the affidavit states.
"I searched his phone text messages and found several conversations where he was distributing narcotics," the arresting officer wrote in the affidavit.
According to jail records, at least two other people were arrested in connection with the same case: a 23-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man. Both were passengers in the 33-year-old man's car, according to their jail booking affidavits, and each was in possession of drugs.
The search of the residence and shooting happened approximately 2½ hours after the other three people were arrested, according to jail documents. The 24-year-old man, who also lived at the house, according to court records, had a minor criminal history consisting mainly of speeding and traffic infractions.
