MOAB — A 77-year-old man from Germany died after an apparent fall while hiking in Arches National Park, the National Park Service said Wednesday.

The incident occurred on Tuesday on a primitive section of the Windows Loop Trail, and the man was identified as Rudolf Peters of Haltern am See, Germany. Bystanders attempted to resuscitate the man, but the efforts were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Area emergency medical service officials also responded.

Officials from the Grand County Sheriff's Office and National Park Service are investigating but have provided few other details.

"Visitors are reminded that uneven surfaces, changeable weather and preexisting health conditions are all important factors to consider when choosing a safe and enjoyable hike," said a National Park Service statement.
